Supporting the maintenance of the French language in Kakuma [fr]

Out of a 185,000 refugees, Kakuma has around 16 000 native French speakers. The linguistic services of the French embassy have been supporting for years the pedagogical and methodological training for French as a Foreign Language.

Out of a 185,000 refugees, Kakuma has around 16 000 native French speakers coming from countries such as Rwanda, Burundi and Congo.

In this context, the linguistic services of the French embassy have been supporting for years the pedagogical and methodological training for French as a Foreign Language.
Indeed, keeping the French from a generation to another will enable this fringe of the Kakuma population to reintegrate their country when they will be able to go back, just like it is currently happening for the Rwandese refugees.

Indeed, the embassy gave pedagogical resources (books and manuals for French as a Foreign Language) and offered a two-day training on their use in April 2019.

Other trainings are being discussed with different actors such as the UNHCR, the JRS (Jesuites Refugee Services), the retired teachers’ of French association (AGIR in French) or even the Borderless Educators’ group (GREF in French).
